Unadventurous Painting

with 2 comments

In Holland Cotter’s recent review of “The Jewel Thief”, he claims most of the many paintings exhibited in New York City are unadventurous and that the state of painting today are “like so many slightly rearranged cover versions of hit styles from the past”.  I’m not in New York, and I don’t know what he’s looking at, but in reviewing various painters’ works over the internet, I find the state of painting quite exciting recently.  Below are a few of my favorites.  Are these examples of the unadventurous?

Trudy Benson, “Inside Out”, 2010

Trudy Benson, “Radiation Spill”, 2010

Keltie Ferris, “Rain Dogs Unplugged”, 2010

Keltie Ferris, “Red, Yellow & Blueprint”, 2010

Stephane Calais, “Les canons anciens”, 2009

Stephane Calais, “La stratégie du jour”, 2009

Lesley Vance, “Untitled (37), 2010

Lesley Vance, “Untitled (39)”, 2010

Kristine Moran, “Shady Lady”, 2010

Kristine Moran, “Sidestep”, 2010
